The word “midwife” originates from Middle English and literally translates to “with-woman.” Midwives are trained birth professionals that specialize in caring for low-risk women and their newborns. They provide expert care, education, counseling, and support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Midwives collaborate within a network with other care providers, who can offer consultation and collaboration when needed.
A Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), also known as Licensed Midwives (LM) is a knowledgeable, skilled, and professional primary maternity care provider. CPMs are trained and qualified to provide complete maternity care, as well as newborn care through 6 weeks of life. They receive midwifery training through a MEAC-accredited program or Portfolio Evaluation Process (PEP). Regardless of their educational path, they are certified by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and licensed in Texas by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). They specialize in out-of-hospital births that take place in homes or at birth centers focusing on holistic family centered care.
We wholeheartedly welcome the presence of siblings, family members, and friends during your prenatal visits. We strongly encourage our clients to bring their loved ones along to meet the midwives, ensuring everyone is well-prepared for the upcoming journey.
Family-centered births are encouraged, allowing you to choose the adults or children you’d like to have in the room during your delivery. However, an additional adult who is not your primary support person must accompany children throughout labor and postpartum.
A doula is a professional labor support person who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational care throughout labor and birth. The word “doula” comes from the Greek term meaning “woman caregiver” or “women’s servant,” reflecting the nurturing role doulas play during the childbirth experience. While doulas do not perform medical tasks or make clinical decisions—that remains the responsibility of a midwife —they offer invaluable support through comfort measures like breathing techniques, massage, positioning suggestions, and encouragement. Some doulas also provide childbirth education and guidance during pregnancy, while others specialize in postpartum care, helping families adjust to life with a newborn by supporting feeding, rest, recovery, and emotional well-being. Research shows that having a doula can lead to shorter labors, fewer interventions, and more positive overall birth experiences.
Due to the numerous benefits of having a doula as part of your care team we highly recommend hiring one. If you’re a first-time parent, planning your first out-of-hospital birth, or attempting a VBAC after a single cesarean, a doula will be a required part of your care team to ensure you receive optimal support. If you prefer to hire a doula not on our staff, please verify that they are included on our preferred list available at the birth center.
If a hospital transfer is needed your doula will accompany you. This dedicated presence strengthens communication, boosts confidence, and promotes a more positive birth experience.
Birth centers are a popular choice for those seeking a natural, comfortable, and personalized birth experience, particularly for individuals who wish to minimize medical interventions. They offer a warm, home-like environment with holistic, family-centered care provided by experienced, licensed midwives. Births at birth centers are associated with lower rates of interventions such as cesarean sections and epidurals. For those with low-risk pregnancies, birth centers provide a supportive setting that prioritizes natural birth, encourages breastfeeding, and often leads to a quicker, more comfortable postpartum recovery. In many cases, birth center care is also more cost-effective than hospital births.
Yes! Each birth suite can accommodate a birth pool for your water birth. We understand that using water and full submersion tubs can provide pain relief, relaxation, reduced stress for the baby, and support for position changes during labor. Our Midwives have extensive experience in supporting water births as a safe and effective option for childbirth, and we are delighted to offer this option to you.
While we provide midwifery care for low-risk women, we understand that occasional transfers may be necessary. Our trained staff is equipped to detect birth complications to either manage them or seek a higher level of care. We discreetly have all necessary equipment, oxygen, IV therapy, tinctures, and medications conveniently stocked in each birth suite.
In case of an emergent transfer during labor, we are conveniently located less than a mile from HCA Houston Clear Lake and UTMB Health Clear Lake Campus. Most transfers are non-emergent, allowing you to travel by private vehicle to your preferred hospital for care. If you choose to continue care at the hospital where our consulting OB-GYN has privileges, we will do our utmost to facilitate a transfer.
We maintain a collaborative relationship with an OB-GYN, which allows us to prescribe medications for common pregnancy and postpartum complaints, if necessary. In case of additional care requirements, we have comprehensive referral resources available. Most complaints can be effectively managed or prevented through proper nutrition, supplements, diet, and exercise.
Choosing a birth center is a personal decision, not one dictated by your insurance company. We are currently not in network with any major insurance carriers, but don’t compromise on your birth team based on what your insurance covers. Prior to your consultation contact our billing specialist to figure out your out of pocket costs. Out of pocket costs can vary widely depending on your insurance plan, deductibles, and co-pays. Our billing specialist will discuss these costs with you. We offer a flexible payment plan, allowing you to select the perfect birth place and team that aligns with your preferences and the needs of your family.
If you do not have insurance, you have to option to pay in full at your initial visit at a discounted rate. We accept several forms of payment and are happy to work with you to create a flexible payment plan. Be sure to ask about our available discounts for military personnel, first responders, and teachers.
We currently are not in network with Medicaid, but we do offer a limited number of scholarships to women currently enrolled in Medicaid. For more information, please inquire during your consultation.
Yes, we encounter mothers who initially seek care from a different provider but later transfer their care to our practice once they decide to deliver at the birth center. If you’re less than 36 weeks pregnant, we strongly advise you to transfer your care as early as possible during your pregnancy. This allows us ample time to get to know you, review your health history, make necessary financial arrangements, and ensure you have sufficient time to attend childbirth classes.
In cases of transfer greater than 36 weeks, one of our midwives will need to request your medical records for review to determine if you’re suitable for midwifery care. You should continue receiving prenatal care from your current provider and completing all necessary lab work and ultrasounds until you’ve transferred care to KBC. Please contact our office as soon as possible to discuss this option.
If your pregnancy remains low risk, your midwife will serve as your primary care provider and can provide all of your prenatal care. However, if a higher level of care becomes necessary at any point, we will refer you to a physician and either collaborate with them or facilitate a smooth transfer of care to ensure your safety and continuity of support.
If you have already been receiving care from an OB-GYN, we will request your medical records and continue your routine prenatal care from where you left off with your previous provider.
